On March 4th, India and Sweden marked a significant step in their relationship by launching India-Sweden Sustainability Day in New Delhi. The event focused on accelerating green economic growth and industrial transformation, highlighting both countries’ commitment to a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.
This collaboration leverages India’s recent G-20 leadership and Sweden’s renowned green innovations. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in the areas of energy, environment, and urban development, solidifying their commitment to cooperation.
“Sustainability is about meeting today’s needs without compromising those of future generations,” emphasized Jan Thesleff, Sweden’s Ambassador to India. Håkan Jevrell, Sweden’s State Secretary for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the progress in decarbonizing heavy industries with Swedish fossil-free steel production.
India and Sweden are collaborating on clean energy initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and research & development projects through international partnerships.
The event, organized by Team Sweden (the Swedish Embassy, Consulate-General in Mumbai, and Business Sweden), Swedish Energy Agency, and Vinnova, showcased collaboration between Swedish companies and Indian stakeholders. Companies like Alfa Laval, SPOWDI, SaltX, Aliema, Kraftpowercon, and Atlas Copco are working together to drive innovation and sustainability.
“Team Sweden in India is committed to ‘Pioneering the Possible’ alongside India,” stated Cecilia Oskarsson, Sweden’s Trade & Invest Commissioner. “We offer innovative solutions, best-in-class technologies, and expertise for heavy industries.” The “Sustainability by Sweden Ecosystem” fosters collaboration for a greener future.
Discussions emphasized the importance of transformative technologies for sustainable development. Key areas included sustainable energy, reducing carbon footprints in hard-to-abate sectors, harnessing technology and innovation for a green future, and achieving strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth.
The event also showcased successful collaborations between Swedish technology providers and Indian counterparts, along with a panel discussion on harnessing technology and innovation for a green future.
